Scans

Those serious about improving genetic know that body scans are an important aid in the quest for continued improvement.

Understanding CT scan images of a sheep

Sheep are positioned on their back in a purpose built cradle, for CT scanning.

When looking at the images tissues of different density are shown as different shades of grey: Bone is shown as white
• Muscle as light grey
• Fat as dark grey
• Air or gas as black

Three cross-sectional scans are taken, namely:
• Hind leg
• Fifth lumbar vertebra
• Eighth rib
These three scans enable carcass fat, muscle and bone to be predicted with 90-98% accuracy.Below and to the right, we show the Hind leg and the fifth lumbar (loin/chop) area for selected Drinkstone ram.
